“You are inhabiting information that may or may not be useful to you anymore. I want you to interrogate what you think the rules of the game are. That you can only “make it’ if you follow these rules, if you do all of the things on this checklist, then you’ll get what you want. I would love for you to dig into that and ask yourself, ‘Is that true?’ As your micro action today, I want you to identify all of the rules that you have come into contact with over time. Then, I want you to take the fattest red marker you can find and cross them out. Ask yourself, ‘What would my life look like, what would my creativity look like, what would my music sound like, what would my field and industry look like if I stopped believing this rule existed and I pursued what I really wanted it to look like?’ Because that’s it, divas, your creativity, your life force, depends on you knowing when to stop believing in the ‘rules’.”

We always talk about micro actions on this podcast which is about chunking something down so it’s really manageable. While enjoying a busy professional singing career performing lead roles with such opera companies as Deutsche Oper Berlin, Baltimore Opera, Teatro Grattacielo, Nashville Opera, Sarasota Opera, Baltimore Concert Opera, Opera Maryland and others, soprano Francesca Mondanaro found her way into teaching as her own colleagues began asking for lessons. It was a natural fit after having studied vocal pedagogy for over 20 years with her own vocal mentors, and having had a unique, challenging instrument of her own that she had to build from bottom to top, into a voice that is still hired to this day. Composer, producer, and development professional, Jillian Flexner refuses to be labeled as one thing and that's exactly why I wanted her to join us for a Masterclass episode on Studio Class. After going through an intense period of burn-out in 2017, I knew I needed to make some changes in my life to avoid feeling that way again in the future. I hadn’t spent a lot of time with guided meditations or affirmations before then but I heard one of my mentor’s voices in my head saying, “just throw everything at it.” So, I did. I found that I really enjoyed certain guided meditations and affirmations and I love them in audio form for when I’m walking the dog or getting ready. In fact, I even make personalized tracks for my clients. If you’re interested, you can find them for purchase in my store on my website meganihnen.com. I find that when I’m listening to my affirmations, my brain can really run wild “decorating the idea” - I love to embellish it and add on to it the more I listen. If you’re into law of attraction stuff, there’s a “17 second rule” that states that the manifestation process begins once a single thought has been held for 17 seconds. I tried to create the pauses between the phrases in this meditation to allow for that amount of time so that you can really let the idea take hold. Anyway, here is my affirmations for divas track for you to listen to whenever you might need a little more oomph.

The avoidance of what we fear, however, is exactly the same. Human beings fear rejection. Biologically wired with a longing to belong, we fear being seen in a critical way. We will actively avoid situations in which we feel the potential to be rejected.
\n\nNot singers, though. No, no, musicians pursue those opportunities. Divas put themselves out on a limb constantly. They open themselves up to feedback and constructive criticism from teachers, coaches, mentors, adjudicators, and audiences. They understand they will hear “no” more often than “yes.” But, it’s that dogged persistence in the face of rejection that makes the “yes” so much sweeter.
